I believe there are consequences that occur which are not specifically directed by parents that underscore the lessons to be learned, ex. a detention slip for doing something stupid but harmless like being late to class. When the behaviour is recurrent, parents often need to add consequences of their own since it appears the lesson is not learned. In other words, if our child shows remorse and learned the lesson, that is enough for the small stuff. Focus on the bigger issues. I disagree that a child may be deceitful because they hide a mistake. Just something to consider.
